Another thing is that if you’re moving from out of state, you can get a work-exchange job at a hostel. You work for them anywhere from 20-30 hours a week and get a free room in exchange. Usually there’s a limit of anywhere from six weeks to six months for this arrangement, but I’ve known people who have done it as a good way to get settled in NYC.

My room is private (and I have a lock on my door, should I want to use it). It’s exactly like having a roommate, except I don’t have the financial responsibility that comes with signing a lease and I pay weekly instead of monthly. I use the kitchen and living room freely, and I get along with the woman who holds the lease (my roommate/landlord) quite well.

Ok, i’ll check those out, though i wasn’t planning on moving for another month or so. Are the rooms that cost $135 a week private or shared?

They aren’t really available online. If you’re thinking of moving here from Colorado, my advice would be to reserve space in a hostel for a few days – the Jazz Hostels are the best I’ve found in the city – so you have a place to crash while you look for a room. I moved into my room the same day I looked at it, and that’s not uncommon.

When you arrive, let me know and I’ll get you in touch with the woman I rent my room from (who is my landlord/roommate). She has a large network of places, and she’s mindful of what it’s like for a woman living in certain areas of the city, so she tries to place women in safe, nice places.

Thanks so much I thinking of moving to New York from from Colorado and I cant find anything cheap online. Do you know any of the names of the rental agencies in Washington Heights that i could look up online?

In Washington Heights (especially on Broadway from around 147th St. up to 162nd St.), there are room rental agencies galore. If you go in, you usually pay a finders fee of $150 or one week’s rent; they give you a list of rooms to go look at, and you go look at them. The second one I looked at, I liked. It’s a smallish room but it’s furnished (with a TV, DVD player, and window A/C), and the weekly rent includes utilities. It helps to speak Spanish, but it’s not necessary.

Barring that, check out Craigslist. There are lots of places, especially in Brooklyn and Queens, where you can find a roommate situation for around the same price. The benefit to the room rental service vs. finding a roommate that way (for me) was that the service has a much smaller up-front cost. I had to come up with a $150 finders fee, plus the first week’s rent, and a one-week deposit (a total of $420) to move in vs. at least one month’s rent + a one-month security deposit (and passing a credit check) if I’d have gone the roommate route. If you have the money to do that, it’s an option. I just didn’t have $1,000 or more sitting around in order to do that myself. Good luck!

Amy, this is wonderful. Help me. Based on just what I have read, I would need a bit of guidance. I have been out of the city for so long that certain things like, good housing and medical are out of my knowledge base….for me that’s saying a lot, because I love me so research. I hope you can get your book published. I would love contribute but due to my student loans I have none to spare. Luckily I am doing a ton of free things over the summer, so I get my NYC joy from that.
